Matar Chola Masala (Dhaba Style)

Matar chola masala is the most famous and authentic recipe from Punjab. Spicy and Tangy taste of matar chola masala is very  popular in India. A very quick and easy recipe whose soul is Dry peas. It could be served in house parties or Birth day parties. You can serve matar chola masala with jeera rice, puri or chapati and  if you want you can serve it without puri or rice. It can be eaten in breakfast as well.

Ingredients

Dry Peas  2 cup
Onion  diced 3
Tomato cubed 2
Garlic cloves 7-8 
Ginger 1 inch (cut into small pieces)
Garam masala 1/2 teaspoon
Cumin Powder 1 teaspoon
Coriander Powder 1 teaspoon
Dry mango powder 1/2 teaspoon
Red chilly powder 1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
Baking Soda 1/4 teaspoon
Black pepper 8-10 
Fresh coriander leaves finely chopped
Cinnamon stick 1 inch
Green chilly 2
Bay leaf 1
Lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon
Salt to taste


Preparation

Step 1: Clean dry peas (dry matar) with fresh water and soak them  for 6-8 hours in water.

Step 2: Take garlic cloves, , chopped ginger, black pepper in a mixer jar and grind them together and pour the paste into a bowl.
Step 3: Take garam masala powder, coriander powder, red chilly powder and turmeric powder in a bowl and add 2 table spoon of water. Keep the mixture aside.


How to make Matar Chola Masala (Method)

Step 1: Pour soaked dry peas in a pressure cooker. Add 1 cup of water in the pressure cooker and then add salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in the pressure cooker. 

Step 2: Place pressure cooker on medium flame, let it whistle twice and then turn off the stove.

Step 3: Place a pan on medium flame, add 2 tablespoon of oil and let the oil become hot enough.
Once the oil becomes hot add the grinned ingredients and 1 bay leaf into it. Saute for 1 minute.


Step 4: Now add diced onion into the pan and saute until light golden onion is obtained and then add masala mixture into the pan and mix every thing properly.




Step 5: Now add cubed tomatoes into the pan, add salt to taste.Saute for sometime and cook until oil separates.




Step 6: Now add boiled dry peas into the pan, mix with dry gravy, add dry mango powder and cook for 5 minutes. Turn off the stove





Step 7: Add  1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice and mix it properly (optional).

Step 8: Garnish Matar chola masala with coriander leaves and finely chopped onion. Tangy and spicy matar chola masala is ready.
